White House wants “illegal streaming” a felony, allow FBI to wiretap offenders

The White House today proposed sweeping revisions to U.S. copyright law, including making “illegal streaming” of audio or video a federal felony and allowing FBI agents to wiretap suspected infringers.

The power that the federal government has amassed is just disgusting. Imagine streaming a live CBS news broadcast over the internet, the CBS logo is clearly in the corner for all to see. Minutes later armed men bust through your door with no warrant and haul you off to a prison because of rights that were given to them under the Patriot Act. Also, your whole life is now ruined by the government – so much for your life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

Under federal law, wiretaps may only be conducted in investigations of serious crimes, a list that was expanded by the 2001 Patriot Act to include offenses such as material support of terrorism and use of weapons of mass destruction. The administration is proposing to add copyright and trademark infringement, arguing that move “would assist U.S. law enforcement agencies to effectively investigate those offenses.”

Are you starting to finally see that the “Patriot Act” (they always name them opposite of what they are, silly Washington) is not for the “terrorists”? For example, I’m not sure if anyone has seen the documentary on natural gas called GasLand but actor Mark Ruffalo was placed on the terrorist watch list for promoting the film. At the same time, Democratic politicians tend to be a bit more enthusiastic about the topic. Biden was a close Senate ally of copyright holders, and President Obama picked top copyright industry lawyers for Justice Department posts. Last year, Biden warned that “piracy is theft.”

No less than 78 percent of political contributions from Hollywood went to Democrats in 2008, which is broadly consistent with the trend for the last two decades, according to OpenSecrets.org.

Biden warned the piracy is theft – I wonder if he understands that taxation is theft as well? What a bunch of pigs up there in D.C. Just totally swayed by money, special interest groups campaign and lobby to make sure their interests are protected by the power of the law instead of actually having to compete for their continued market share.
