NJ Middle School Wants Drug Tests For Children

From the article: http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/01/10/new-jersey-town-to-vote-on-middle-school-drug-tests/ linked on Druge Report

The Board of Education will vote Wednesday on a plan to randomly test sixth, seventh and eighth graders to see if they are under the influence of drugs. School administrators said they were confident the proposal would pass.

So instead of actually paying attention to the kids, the decision will be made to drug test kids as to “get them out of the way.”  Instead of focusing educational needs towards getting children interested in learning.  This will add up to less education for students.  Children are being treated like criminals just for walking in the door, just like we are with the TSA at the airport.

The plan is supposed to encourage kids not to use drugs, by threat of punishment.  Seems that is always the governments motive, and the only way they operate.  They rule by fear – Fear that you will be fined, punished or even jailed.  We see how well these policy of strict laws and rules has slowed drug use in this country…

The program is voluntary and both parents and students must consent. School officials said it was important to note that if a student tested positive, they would not be suspended or have the results sent to the police.

Instead, those students would get counseling or even be referred to a rehab facility.

The program is voluntary, I suppose they mean like taxes :).  But in the first quote I pasted it clearly says they “plan to randomly test sixth, seventh and eighth graders to see if they are under the influence of drugs.”  Seems a bit contradictory.

The part about not getting suspended or having results sent to the police is a plus, I suppose.  Still it makes you wonder what path the child would go down in “counseling” or at the “rehab facility.”  Could this be used to get parents in trouble, if the child happened to steal a joint from his parents?  I’d say it’s a strong possibility.

I am in no way for children using drugs, not for any legal reasons, I simply think its bad for a developing brain.  Once you are old enough to make your own responsible decisions (which I’ve noticed varies a lot from person to person) you are free to put whatever you want into your body.

I think education about drugs that we all know are out there is important.  I’m not talking about lies that most of us were told in programs like D.A.R.E.  I’m talking about the truth, you know the stuff that sets you free.  If we build a nation of thinkers when they are young, we end up with a nation of thinkers when they are grown.  You reap what you sow.
